Anxiety Q & A

What is anxiety?

Anxiety is a normal part of life, and it plays a critical role in alerting us to circumstances that should cause fear and worry.

Everyone experiences anxiety from time to time. In some cases, those feelings prompt beneficial changes; in other instances, they’re a temporary reaction to a distinct stressor.

Anxiety disorders differ in that the feelings of fear and worry aren’t always rational and don’t abate when there is no longer a stressor involved. That can be disruptive to anyone, including children.

What are the symptoms of anxiety?

Anxiety disorders occur when fear, nervousness, and shyness begin to cause you to avoid certain scenarios, places, and activities. Some things to look for include:

  • Sweating
  • Restlessness
  • Increased heart rate
  • Trembling
  • Weakness or sleepiness
  • Sleep disruptions
  • Rapid breathing
  • Difficulty controlling worry or fear
  • Urge to avoid anything that triggers anxiety

Some people with anxiety will begin to encounter trouble at work or in social settings.

How are anxiety and depression connected?

Many people with anxiety will also develop depression. If you notice the following symptoms of depression, be sure to speak with Dr. Abrar right away:

  • Changes in eating habits
  • Lack of energy
  • Withdrawal from friends or favored activities
  • Anger or irritation
  • Mood swings
  • Low self-esteem

Everyone goes through occasional periods of sadness, but when depression begins to alter your normal routines, it’s time to seek help.

How are depression and anxiety treated?

There are several ways to treat anxiety and depression, and Dr. Abrar works with you to find a path that’s right for you. Treatment plans can change depending on how you respond.

Cognitive behavioral therapy is one such approach. This type of talk therapy helps you learn new coping skills and techniques which gives you the ability to combat feelings of anxiety or depression. Cognitive behavior therapy can be a very effective treatment.

Medication might also play a role in treating anxiety and depression. Used in conjunction with some form of talk therapy, medication can make a world of difference and can be used for short-term and long-term treatment.

Dr. Abrar takes a very individualized approach to treating anxiety and depression.
